Nell is a hedgehog who is making a book out of autumn. Every afternoon she carries a new found leaf back to the hollow, presses it flat between two pages, and writes the date beside it in small careful letters. Maple went in at the start of September. Oak came a week after. Today she found one that turned red only along the edges and she carried it home in both paws so the wind would not take it. She works in the deepest part of the leaf pile, where the ground holds its warmth the longest and the light comes through gold. When the book is full she will read it back to herself all winter.
