Ambrose is a frog who keeps his library in the corner of the greenhouse, where the light comes through the glass a soft green. He is a serious reader, with small round spectacles that slide down his nose whenever he leans too far into a paragraph. Most afternoons he builds himself a chair out of whatever he is working through: four or five clothbound volumes stacked spine to spine, the heaviest on the bottom, the one he is halfway through on top. His tea goes on the shelf beside him, in the good cup, and he lets it steam a while before he touches it. When somebody wanders in he marks his page with a ribbon, pours a second cup, and starts telling them about the ending. He can go on about it for an hour. Most people stay.
