Corbin is a German Shepherd, four months old, and this is the part of Christmas Eve where everybody else has gone up to bed. He got hold of the light string about an hour ago. He has not pulled it, he is just lying flat on the boards with one paw over the cord and the bulbs going on and off under his chin, green then red then green. The tree is behind him with the presents stacked at the foot of it. The fire in the grate has burned down to a low orange and the stockings are hanging still. When the house creaks he lifts his head and listens, then puts it back down on the warm cord and waits for somebody to come and find him.
