Fennel is a red squirrel and the tree standing out in the field is the tallest thing for a mile. Somebody strung lights on it, all the way up, and left a gold star on the top. He found it at dusk. He is partway up now, in among the branches with the bulbs glowing red and warm on either side of him, going in stages and stopping at each one to look out. There is snow on the ground underneath and the sky behind the tree has gone orange along the edges. Nothing up there belongs to him. He climbs anyway, and he will sit at the top while the light goes, watching the field.
