Down the cobbles there is a well, a shop with barrels stacked outside the door, a forge still glowing orange at this hour, and an inn with every window lit and smoke going up from the chimney. Somebody in there has propped the door open. Marlow shifts his satchel onto his shoulder, climbs the last of the path, and heads in to find out who is cooking.
